The Big Day!! The tent is up, the skies are clear, and a certain Worldwide Planner is positively giddy as a schoolgirl.

katie

July 15. 2008 11:45

Our day so far: Doublechecking the wireless, regretting this blog is happening in the comments (yes, we know we should have talked to IT sooner-- not all of us are "tech-savvy" okay??) and sharpening our (incredibly craven- we still have to work here on Wednesday, people!!) editorial judgment. Join us throughout the day to watch us sweat as we prepare to make public jest of people we do currently and would one day like to work for!! Mom and Dad, please start making up the guest room now.

"You said something about Truth Lies and Advertising, if you hadn't written it, you probably wouldn't have read it... Do you think you'd read Perfect Pitch?" -Russell Davies
"Um. Probably not." -Jon Steel

To whet your appetite for this evening, enjoy an interview between one of the last honest men in advertising (and one of tonight's speakers!) Jon Steel, and Russell Davies, discussing the publication of Jon's latest book Perfect Pitch.

Prelude to Guy's speech on glocal brands:

So Guy, want to give us a little color on your hopes for tonight?" -KP
"Just tell them I hope the planning Indians enjoy the teepee." -GM
"You mean the Planning Native Americans."- KP
"Okay.Wait, what? what are they?" -GM

katie

July 15. 2008 14:32

Sitting outside testing the wireless-- am at center of giant teepee surrounded by 52" plasma screens. This event appears to be blending the best of the past (history-rich teepee) with the technology of the future (plasmas!!) Perhaps an apt model for Planning's road forward? Food for thought!! Thank you cheap metaphor!!

katie

July 15. 2008 16:19

T-13 to planner pre-cocktails!! I think is incumbent on liveblog to indulge in some New Journalism (e.g. the participatory parts) - consider it a JWT homage to Hunter S. T.

katie

July 15. 2008 16:51

"So Jon, if you could be a planner twenty years ago, today, or twenty years in the future, which would it be?" -KP
"Twenty years ago." -Jon Steel
"And why is that? different set of skills? More emphasis on brand stories?"
"So I could retire twenty years earlier." - JS

[It should be noted that Jon did, when nudged, elaborate further: he thinks the required skills are the same, the challenges are the same, but "fewer people are willing to accept the challenge." Young planners, he's speaking your language!!)

katie

July 15. 2008 16:52

"Rich, any pithy thoughts on the future of planning? what you like, what you don't??"
"When tyranny is law, revolution is order." -Rich Buchanan

I'm not sure I aptly communicated the assignment.

katie

July 15. 2008 17:15

"Jeremy Bullmore remains the one person in British advertising for whom the brilliance to bullshit ratio remains 100%"
-Nigel Bogle

The planners have just watched Jeremy cut the ribbon on the new Jeremy Bullmore room- two choice quotes from Allison's intro:

"There were only 3 people we felt were deserving of these meeting rooms... Jeremy was the first person I called and asked his permission to name the room after him. His response? 'But I'm not dead."'

"There are days I feel I need to be particularly persuasive, and have the essence of JWT flowing through my veins, and on those days I book the Bullmore room." -AB

Here the liveblog takes a brief respite from our now-de-rigeur snark to note, with the utmost sincerity, that no one could deserve this honor more than Jeremy, and that there is no more hotly awaited speech tonight than his.*^ Cheers to a true legend.

katie

July 15. 2008 17:16

*Except for maybe my brilliant and visionary direct boss Guy Murphy.

katie

July 15. 2008 17:18

^Who is also neck and neck with Jon Steel, a very influential and important planner in his own right [and, look at that, another boss of mine!]

katie

July 15. 2008 17:25

To everyone's great relief, some nice ambiant music has replaced the comm's previous soundtrack: the audio from America's Most Smartest Model.

[This liveblogger would like to note that that show is in no way representative of the general quality of pop culture in the states, and before you guffaw your flavored cashews (in the comm and going fast!) all over your keyboard you would do well to take a moment and consider your favorite tv show. The Wire? Grey's Anatomy? The Sopranos? Yeah that's what I thought.]

katie

July 15. 2008 17:26

"Shady, who are you most excited to see tonight?"

"It's gotta be Jeremy Bullmore. I mean, he's the rock star among rock stars."

katie

July 15. 2008 17:40

"Lex, what are your thoughts on the future of planning?"

"Future of planning?? I'm more worried about the future of ME."

Happy Birthday to Lex Robinson! Not a day over 26...

katie

July 15. 2008 17:42

Eavesdropping on the John Grant sound test-- here's a preview, he seems to plan to "Walk around the stage"!! OH, the SUSPENSE!

katie

July 15. 2008 18:28

News so far: Jon Steel is speaking on "anger" and would like to assure the multitudes that it is "all in good fun" and "what he is supposed to do" (much like this blog!!) Also, 3 out of 4 planners have agreed so far that Tony Quinn was an "excellent" choice while the 4th chose to call him "exemplary" instead. BONUS BLIND ITEM: Which JWTer is currently "co-planning" with a member of a NSYNc-esque pop group??

katie

July 15. 2008 18:30

Allison has begun the intro- she notes that 40th is our ruby anniversary, hence the ruby-themed interior of the comm. A collective "AH, so THAT's what that was" escapes the group...

katie

July 15. 2008 18:38

Allison's reflections of account planning through an account manager's eyes:

"It's like saying behind every ship's navigator, is a great captain." This was followed by a complex metaphor regarding navigators who went around the Cape of Good Hope vs. navigators who went around the Cape of Something Else, and I got distracted by wondering why, for the 1000th time, American schools don't seem to think geography's very important.

katie

July 15. 2008 18:40

"Eclectic and often instinctive"
- Allison's apt and inspiring description of the "process" (or lack thereof) of early JWT planners.

katie

July 15. 2008 18:42

Allison on the critical importance of great planners:

"When you do really need to land on one wheel, or one engine, you really do need the best navigator in the world to show you really what you need to know, which is where the hell the airstrip is."

katie

July 15. 2008 18:42

JEREMY BULLMORE HAS TAKEN THE STAGE.

katie

July 15. 2008 18:46

15. 2008 18:44

He is charmingly mad that Allison failed to mention the title of his book, "which you [the audience] should know by now, but don't, due to an absence of planning." He also explains that he gave his book the title he did in order to, as he said, show off. "I know what it means, and you don't, which is a very good place to start."

We are officially, slavishly, eating out of his hand.

katie

July 15. 2008 18:50

Haha! Jeremy just called the Creatives undereducated people in black teeshirts! This after Allison called them sulky!! NB: they are not just saying this because it's fun; they are saying it because it's TRUE.

katie

July 15. 2008 18:56

"Here, take these pills, I invented them yesterday and I'm a scientist."

Above: Jeremy on why post-rationalization (or, his preferred term, "retrospective sense-making") is actually much more important and legitimate than it gets credit for: no one, after all, would trust the above without a lot of additional testing and- you guessed it- post-rationalization on why they're effective.

katie

July 15. 2008 19:01

NB: also, Alison Burns spelled with one L, not two! Am DRUNK with POWER over here.

katie

July 15. 2008 19:02

JON STEEL UP NEXT. He opens with a nicely outre joke to loosen up the crowd- how else do you follow the famous Bullmore??

katie

July 15. 2008 19:11

Jon is now lamenting the downfall of the sexy-kind procurement. SPICY!

katie

July 15. 2008 19:12

He is also, in fairness, saying many other important things. It's just a lot harder to type the thoughts that go on for longer than 10 words or so.

katie

July 15. 2008 19:19

JOHN GRANT IS NEXT.

He is very grateful to be among people he has so admired during his career, and he is so pleased to be part of such a naughty industry!! What is going on tonight??

katie

July 15. 2008 19:19

Oh. "knotty."

katie

July 15. 2008 19:23

JG: Is planning in the midst of a mid-life crisis? Do products still have life cycles and are brands still eternal??

katie

July 15. 2008 19:29

JG: Are we stagnant or will we be generative? John is generative through sustainability. Something funny will come here soon.

katie

July 15. 2008 19:32

Guy: "Are we creating a lot of bits, but not a lot of brands? WHY do we do SO MUCH powerpoint?"

Your lips to God's ears, buddy.

katie

July 15. 2008 19:33

A survey reveals about 3 people present feel they're in control of their own lives. It dawns on this 24 year old that she may be in the wrong industry.

When does Goldman recruit again? anyone?

katie

July 15. 2008 19:36

"There's no such thing as a global consumer, there's only a local consumer enjoying more and more globally-available things."
-GM

katie

July 15. 2008 19:41

"Ideas for global brands will be rooted less in consumer insight, and more in human truth."- GM

katie

July 15. 2008 19:45

"Planners will be like Piranhas... The notion of centers of planning... is becoming outdated pretty fast, and the idea that the best ideas must come from London or New York [ed. note: big up to Brooklyn, woot!!] is simply idea racism." -GM

katie

July 15. 2008 19:47

Presentations now at a close, on to Q and A. Mad rush to bar. Ah, London.

katie

July 15. 2008 19:54

JB, on the audience: "We're talking to quite ignorant people here."

katie

July 15. 2008 19:56

"More and more of the money is going through media companies, and less and less of it is going through Creative Agencies. Isn't it awful we now have to specify them as Creative?" -JB

katie

July 15. 2008 19:59

"Guy, you've mentioned fixed points for strategies to move forwards. What would be your fixed points for strategies for the next 40 or 100 years?"- Shady
"Thank you Shady. [note: this seemed less than 100% sincere.] A fixed point is being able to interpret strategy into creation... a fixed point is an ability to help a group of people turn strategy into creation, otherwise you're just a consultant." -GM

katie

July 15. 2008 20:01

"I'm not answering your question because I've already forgotten what it is." -JS

Oh jon, you slay us.

katie

July 15. 2008 20:02

John Grant held a debate on his blog about what he should say to us tonight? CHEATER!! That's change you can xerox!!!

katie

July 15. 2008 20:09

JB:"We have never been in greater need of good marketing than we are now. Because it won't all be for crisps."

katie

July 15. 2008 20:13

A last Q from Craig Davis!! Creatives and Planners! Like Sparta vs. Athens!! Coming together at last!

Hello! Congratulations on time! The strategic planning revolutionized our profession.
I worked in JWT Brazil (Rio de Janeiro) for 2 years. I learned a lot from the Thompson Way.
